The original 1932 was a Nicaraguan puro, and its Lancero eventually landed at No. 23 on Cigar Aficionado's Top 25 of 2007. In other words, 1932 was not invented as another number to put on a cigar box. There have been several versions of the 1932 over the years, so the name requires a little caution. Padilla has changed factories and tobacco sources since the original Pepín-made Miami cigars, and Maduro, Oscuro, San Andrés, and more recent Broadleaf interpretations have all appeared. Current Padilla material describes a 1932 Maduro Lancero as using the established 1932 filler blend with a different wrapper priming, while another recent interpretation places a Mexican San Andrés Maduro wrapper over the classic 1932 blend. The useful thread running through all of them is the same: Padilla has repeatedly returned to the tobacco architecture of his most important cigar and asked what happens when a darker, sweeter wrapper is laid over it.
