Cigar Reveal #304

Aganorsa Leaf
Lunatic Torch

The Aganorsa Leaf JFR Lunatic Torch is a distinctive expression within the Lunatic family, designed to showcase Aganorsa’s “seed-to-ash” philosophy. Rolled at TABSA in Estelí, Nicaragua, the Torch is a puro made entirely from Aganorsa-grown tobaccos, highlighted by a Jalapa Corojo ’99 wrapper over a double binder and fillers from Jalapa and Estelí. What sets the cigar apart is its brush, or shaggy, foot—where the wrapper is removed from the first section, allowing the smoker to taste the binder and filler on their own before the wrapper comes into play. This design is intentional, reflecting Aganorsa’s dedication to educating smokers on the contribution of each leaf in the blend. More than just a cigar, the Torch embodies the company’s innovative spirit, inviting smokers to slow down, pay attention, and experience the transition from component tobaccos to the full harmony of the blend.

As the wrapper started to burn, too, there was a touch of popcorn added to the mix, along with earth and cocoa powder notes. The retrohale was woody and very peppery. As I got into the second third, I got notes of charred wood, earth, and espresso bean. The sweeter notes had pretty much gone away, but there was still plenty of pepper in the mix, both on the palate and nose. In the last third of the Lunatic Torch Imagine I got more popcorn and the charred wood gave way to a more traditional cedar note again. There was a resurgence of sweetness in the mix in the form of dark chocolate, along with a steady pepper spice influence.

The JFR Lunatic Leaf Torch is certainly not going to make a personal list of favorite cigars of 2020. Annoyances with the mess aside, the flavor profile just doesn’t make much sense. It’s a bizarre combination of detailed flavors paired with an intense amount of acidity and sharpness. This is definitely a cigar I’m going to redux in pretty short order as I’m curious to see if things calm down a bit—particularly the acidity—with six months or so of rest. It’s not a bad cigar, but at the moment, it’s definitely not for me.

I had smoked the original JFR Lunatic Torch Churchill when it first came out – and I found it to be a fine cigar. With the Torch in the Toro-sized Visionaries vitola, I found this to be even a better cigar. It has some of the same core flavors of the original, but the flavors seem better balanced and also seem to complement each other quite well. It’s not an overly complex cigar, but the Torch Visionaries does its job and does it well. With a 90 point score, the JFR Lunatic Torch Visionaries reaches our standard of excellence. It’s a cigar I would probably steer to a more seasoned cigar enthusiast because it does have some kick in terms of strength and body. As for myself, this is a cigar I would smoke again – and pick up multiples for the humidor.
