The AJ Fernandez New World Oscuro, introduced in 2014, marked the first blending collaboration between AJ Fernandez and his father, Ismael Fernandez, who returned to the cigar industry after 17 years with the Plasencia family. Named as a tribute to Christopher Columbus’s 1492 introduction of tobacco to the rest of the world, the New World line was conceived as both a historical homage and a personal project celebrating heritage and craftsmanship. Produced in AJ’s Estelí, Nicaragua factory, the cigar quickly gained acclaim, earning Cigar Journal’s “Cigar of the Year” in its debut year and solidifying the New World as a cornerstone in AJ’s portfolio.

The Oscuro blend is a 100% Nicaraguan puro, featuring a dark, oily oscuro wrapper from Estelí, a Jalapa Valley binder, and filler tobaccos from Ometepe, Condega, and Estelí. Offered in a box-pressed format across multiple vitolas, the cigar reflects AJ’s focus on quality, tradition, and regional variety. Its creation fused historical inspiration with the shared artistry of two generations, resulting in a product that blends cultural storytelling with the depth and character of Nicaragua’s best tobacco regions.
