Cigar Reveal #177

La Aroma de Cuba
Mi Amor Reserva

A slightly stronger iteration of the former #2 Cigar of the Year, the Mi Amor Reserva comes from the My Father factory with a Mexican wrapper and Nicaragua binder and fillers. The strength comes from it's utilization of a high-priming leaf of the Mexican wrapper, this is a classic Pepin Garcia cigar with perfect balance and strength, and a full spectrum of complex flavors including bright notes of cherry and earth.

Halfwheel

None of Ashton’s Nicaraguan offerings have come close to dethroning the legendary Ashton VSG on my personal totem pole, but the Mi Amor Reserva might be the closest. It’s not a completely different taken on Mi Amor, it’s a bit more muddled than the regular Mi Amor, but there is a feeling of a lot more flavors. The shining difference is the fruit, maple syrup and candy cane notes—all details rarely found in most cigars, but prevalent in all three samples. Price is steep, even amongst the Ashton portfolio, and that might end up being the biggest problem.

Cigar Aficionado

(#17 Cigar of the Year 2013) Ashton's La Aroma de Cuba Mi Amor brand has made its mark on Cigar Aficionado's tasting panel. The Belicoso size was the magazine's No. 2 cigar of 2011, scoring 95 points, classic on our 100-point scale. After that accolade, Ashton decided to make a stronger, one-size version of the smoke and the result is the superb Maximo. Made with a similar, but not identical, blend to that of the traditional Mi Amor line, the Maximo gets some of its more powerful flavor via a high-priming wrapper leaf grown from Cuban seeds in Mexico's lush San Andrés Valley. The well-made cigar has hickory and almond notes that lead into hints of dark chocolate and earth. It's another memorable smoke from the Garcias and Levins.

Kohnhed

The last third is home run time….the flavors coagulate into an amalgam of all the flavors mentioned heretofore, and perfect the balance of the stick. And then it happens…Creaminess shows up. I would have liked it to have shown up earlier as it would have accented the other flavors, but it is what it is.

In summary, this is an excellent cigar that doesn’t need extensive aging in your humidor. I’ve only had this stick for a week and it shines like the 4th sun of the galaxy Fugeddaboudit. This is a perfect representation of attention to detail and the finest use of Nicaraguan leaves with a Mexican wrapper. Just brilliant.
